I have a long convoluted story about House/EDM music. But in a
nutshell, it's a thing where I've come full circle after almost 30
years. The difference is that this time around, it's MY MUSIC and I'm
totally in love with it. As you and I have discussed, I'm mixing bands
again and I get my fill of "cover bands" so pounding out some 808s is
cathartic.
The one bigger item still on my purchase list is the Focusrite
Scarlett 18i20. I need a couple more gigs to pay for that.
The cool thing about the AKAI FORCE is that it's not just a relatively
complete DJ/Arranger/Instrument, but is also an excellent side-car
device for extensive audio processing. I just got it last week so I'm
struggling through the "where is?" stage. I have my first gig with it
this week, though, so I'm narrowing down the scope of what I need to
do with it right now. If I don't get it settled by tonight, I'll just
revert to my MPC/Ableton setup. It's nice to have options. It's an
extremely powerful system too, but I just have to pack the computer,
an outboard audio interface, and two controllers, instead of just the
single stand-alone device.
For DJing, this stuff is pretty amazing. Just load and go. I can have
it automatically adjust tempo and/or key with a click of a button.
Then chop/repeat/skip/repeat/stutter/lofi/eq/flip/slide/mangle
everything right on the fly. Scratchy sounds? I've got a button for
that. Pounding 808's and 909's? Oh yes! Throw in a synth or two and
Bob's your uncle.
I'm really too old for this stuff, but hey, it's still cheeper than hookers.
