Regarding scanning, I found that Neg film was better overall than chromes. 
Greater latitude, more forgiving. And of all that I scanned, Portra 160 was the 
best. But then again, all my favorite films are gone now, Portra 160, Plus-X, 
Verichrome Pan...

I'm finding the discussion interesting. Sadly I'm somewhat a film novice.

What about scanning Reala? Since it was your "all time favorite".
I don't have near the experience that many people on the list have
with various films, . I tended to use the following:

Provia
Velvia
Reala
some Portra
not much else.

Still on my ToDo list is scan/rescan my old film, including a lot of Reala.
I have not tried scanning Reala lately, so out of the loop on proper
Vuescan setup. Using Nikon CoolScan LS-4000

Any more comments on Astia?
