Although the Dawkins quote is recent, Definition One is the old meaning.
Definition Two and the first example are the new usage.
The second example under Def. Two may be used as an interesting example of Def. One. The grumpy cat was not a meme when
first posted in 2012. In that it has become almost universal and long lived, it has become a meme since.
Memes used to arise, now, we pretend they are coined.
