Yes. It won't be this year because of debts and all that, but I'm
hoping to start with the flying lessons next winter. It's not in our
2020 budget.

The skis work very well, but they can limit operations to snow covered
locations. Merrill Field has one gravel runway that they groom for
snow in the winter, and keep that part of the airport ski-friendly.
The rest is paved and plowed. Same with Lake Hood. The gravel runway
and taxiways are plowed, but the lake portion is groomed for ski
operations. To get around the limitations, many of the planes are
equipped with the retractable skis. The key factor, I think, is
whether or not an airplane is capable of flying on floats. If it is,
then the retractables are fine, but if not, then the wheels are
removed and the skis are attached to the landing gear instead.

My friend with the Super Cub and 180 has skis and floats, but rarely
mounts them. He keeps the 29" tires on the Super Cub and lands where
somebody else has been already. If somebody wants to hire him to fly
to some remote backcountry spot that requires skis, he'll fly one of
the charter operations aircraft (like Rust's) and leave his own
aircraft for personal use. The 180, while built by Cessna as a
floatplane, will probably never see water again as it's been fully
restored to factory condition.
