Bad. Bad long throw means expensive helicals and focusing precision. Bad

The video that Bill posted was a flash to the past for me. I had forgotten
that newcomers to Zuikos were often put off by the clicks. Galen Rowell
used that as his excuse for not using Olympus. Said they weren't rugged
enough.

I've worked on a couple of OM aperture mechanisms. It's pretty simple, a small ball bearing on a spring in a hole, pressing against a plastic ring with little dimples in it. The plastic wears, so I don't know if there is a path between the dimples when new or not, but there was on the used lenses I worked on. As I recall, one was just full of gunk, and worked fine when cleaned out. The other may have had wear that allowed the ball to get out of alignment? Some such thing. To Rowell's point, the mechanism looks to me to be more likely to cause trouble with heavy use in unfriendly environments than one without stops. Easy enough, BTW, to remove ball and spring, for a clickless ring.

Galen Rowell grew up near me and did his first climbing 3-4 blocks from where I lived. But he was almost four years older, which is a lifetime at that age, so I didn't know him.

I have a Nikkor 50 macro, bought new, that I cannot use currently
because the grease turned to glue, rugged as it may be,

My thought was to put it in a low oven until hot summer day warm, then work the focus ring a lot. Here's a different set of things to try. <https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-fix-a-stiff-focus-ring-on-a-nikon-lens>

but I've never had any problem with the mechanics of an OM lens.

I have, that is, with things other than aperture detents. The mount release mechanism seems to have been a weak point. Especially with some models with a plastic fulcrum for the lever. I've fixed at least three.
