Indeed I did, offlist, but for the wider benefit, in a bar/café, walk up to
the till to pay, same in a restaurant if you can't get the waiter/waitress
to bring the bill (unusual).

As to tipping, nobody will complain if you don't tip, nobody will complain
if you do, and 10-15% would be fine in a restaurant, but unexpectedly
generous in a café. In a pub, you might offer the barman/barlady "and what
are you having?" when buying a round of drinks - not common, I would say.

But the real "inside tip" is to explain Mike's use of the word "dreich" (not
sure about the spelling). "Had a couple of driech days on Harris/Lewis"
means that the weather was typical Scottish summer weather, absent the
normal howling gales one should expect over there, no constant rain falling
almost horizontally. No, it means grey, drizzle on and off all day, with no
midges. What's not to like - it adds to the atmosphere at Calanais.

Hi Mike,

I am sure Piers will give you a Scotland-specific answer, but what you are
describing is also common here in Spain, especially the part about just
walking up to the bar to pay. In higher-end restaurants this is not done,
but it is otherwise very common here.

As for tipping, there is no European country where the US 15-20% standard
applies. In some countries there is no tipping at all (e.g., Denmark), in
others you just round up a bit (here in Spain).

Cheers,
Nathan

back but don't want to callously occupy seats that could be generating more
revenue. Not like there is a queue usually :)

10% cash rather than writing on the card. Most servers seem pleasantly
surprised so I guess that they've at least heard of the custom. One of the
nicer places had the option to write in 5%, 10% or 15% You'd risk getting
that thrown back in your face at home. How about taxis?

know where. Haven't been able to here in the Hebrides. Had a couple of

Scotland is a wonderfully beautiful country and friendly people. Went to the
small Eriskay Community Hall for music last night A Scottish band, Daimh.
A special treat as a couple band members are from S. Uist , much of it in
Gaelic. Especially moving encore song with the whole audience less two
singing along in Gaelic.
