Hmmm, for flexibility in positioning for macro will concede the contest. F15
vs a Piper. The Gitzo EX series is more a standard pod with an extra trick
but the Uni-Lock designed from ground up for flexibility in positioning.
The center column is almost like a magic arm with the second joint. Is it
carbon fiber?

Hah, as if!

"There are two sizes  of  UNI-LOC  Tripods and Monopods, the ‘Standard Series’, which
are made from 1.250” (30mm) outer
tubes and 1” (25mm) inner tubes and the heavy-duty ‘Major Series’, which are made from
1.375” (35mm) outer tubes and 1.125”
(28mm) inner tubes."

I think they might have mentioned carbon fiber. :-)

I'm supposing that the lighter one should be sufficient for my current gear. I'm not using lenses like the 100-400, and my camera bodies are relatively small and light.

How did you choose that model

I'm not even sure they are still making them. Email or call to check, they give a price and if you want it, they make one up for you?

Choice was pretty simple; what's on the 'Bay? There were a Major 1220 and this
S1700. The 1220 is pretty short.

and about how much dosh?

Listed for $299, offer of $250 accepted. Pix show excellent condition.

Includes a bag and an NPC Prohead ball head. Only sale shown on the 'Bay was $125, delivered. <https://www.ebay.com/itm/NPC-Prohead-Tripod-Ball-Head-Quick-Release-Version-3017-Arca-Swiss-Style-Plate-M-/332597944826?hash=item4d7061e1fa%3Ag%3A0EYAAOSwJEdarZZw&nma=true&si=JCvOKSOogFkFu3%252Bx5rd5fJ%252Fs06c%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557> A seller in Oz is hoping to get $345 delivered for one. <https://www.ebay.com/itm/NPC-Prohead-Tripod-Ball-Head-With-Quick-Release-Arca-Swiss-Size-Plate/122891711312?hash=item1c9ceab350:g:tIgAAOSw-09aSq3R>
KEH offers $34. May have to go to the 'Bay.

The US price list from 2009 is $349. I have no idea if there is still a NoAm
distributor or what a current price might be.

There seems to be a slightly more compact one, though is shorter.

I don't think I want short.
Please fill us in on your impressions.

Inevitably. :-D

It looks tempting.

Would be interesting to compare it to the old Benbo. Who's going to carry all
the freight across the country? ;-)
