We need to experiment with the gear next opportunity.

Indeed, although how do we keep the girls from proposing something more fun?

More to play with by then. All this thread led me to wandering the byways of the web, with the probably inevitable result that a new to me Uni-Loc S1700 should be here in about a week. Clearly, current Benbos have QC problems. I was contemplating an original, British made one. But user comments led me to believe that Uni-Loc has probably made a better version, solving some Benbo weaknesses that have persisted through various owners and manufacturers.

Gitzo 2541 vs. Uni-Loc S1700 at two paces?? ;-)

With the 2541 it is possible to have the cam level at nearly ground level with
the center column past 90 deg to get lower with the cam mounted on the ball
head via the vertical mount of the L bracket. It doesn't look very elegant or
stable, but it works especially counter weighting the ctr colunm.

That particular thing is pretty easy to do a couple of ways; conventional tripod with reversed center column <http://zone-10.com/tope2/main.php?g2_itemId=14126>
( I didn't use an L bracket, but it would work easily)

or using 90° center column and spread legs. <http://galleries.moosemystic.net/MooseFoto/index.php?gallery=Tech/Misc&image=IMG_1116croofm.jpg>

It is easier than mounting the cam upside down, IMO, especially when trying
to use flash---don't ask. I should probably have tired hand holding it with
flash actually.

My solution, other than longer shutter speeds alone, would be hand held continuous LED lighting, which allows me to preview modeling, shadows, etc. Actually, for such low shots, it could just be rested on the floor or on a table top tripod.

I remain puzzled as to a more compact solution.

Both the above examples use relatively compact tripods. The Manfrotto 190 is just short enough to fit in my suitcase and the Velbon UT-45 is seriously compact.

But most of my tripod use is at home, and with 410 geared head, so compact isn't particularly important. Ease of set-up and sturdy reliability are the name of my game.

I can recall and envision situations where something like a Benbo/Uni-Loc would make getting the shot I want easier. It will be interesting to see how I like the S1700. It also comes with the semi-famous NPC Prohead ball head. I need another ball head like another hole in my head, but  . . .

The Carmagne 630 also came with a ball head I don't have a use for. I'm already making a list of tripods and heads to sell (and cameras, and lenses . . .) :-)
