I did some work with the FC-1 and twin macro flashes, but they were just lying
on the table, NOT mounted properly to the lens, and the subject was 2D.

Dean's paeans didn't hurt, either. I only have a couple of rather vague ideas of what to shoot with it.
My first thoughts aren't about extreme mags, just a bit more than I can do with
the 38 mm.
Lighting is probably going to be "fun" to work out. I do have a couple of ideas. Rather than all the Lieberkuhn
illumination for lighting from below through a transparent/translucent stage, I'm thinking of the 4x5 'light table' I've
used successfully for suitable subjects for other uses. A Lieberkuhn reflector looks easy enough to fake, and I could
easily just cut our black paper to lay on the light for the shadow part.
But before that, I'll try out the pair of tiny LED lights on goose-necks that I have. And then there's the poorly
designed diffuser for the LED ring light I have. It continues around the LED ring on the inside, thus whacking any
contrast in a conventional lens it's mounted on. I was thinking of the best way to black out that inside of the ring,
but it might work well for this purpose.The Macro lenses protrude so far in front of the threads that they should be
clear of the light directly hitting FEs.
The huge advantage over film is, of course, instant feedback on what works and
what doesn't.
2D might be all it is good for, with such razor-thin DOF, like a microscope.
As with microscopes, focus stacking should be the cure. With fixed subject and rock solid copy stand and bellows, the
stacking in software should be a doodle.

I’ve been unsuccessful with it. It focuses too close for ring lights, although
I’ve been able to side-light flat surfaces (stamps, coins) with twin lights.
It seems designed for Lieberkuhn illumination. The limited number of Olympus
ones that were made have all disappeared onto the shelves of collectors.
There’s a guy who manufactures white plastic 49mm Lieberkuhn reflectors with a 20mm
focal length with a 3D printer (let me know if you want the link). They are reasonable, about
$7 plus an equal amount of shipping, but I haven’t been inspired yet.
I’m in the process of modifying an 18/3.5 hood for the purpose. I’m going to
take off the cylindrical bit with the 72mm threads, then paint the inside flat white.
With proper illumination and focus bracketing, the 20/2 should do wonders, but I just
haven’t found a practical way to harvest those wonders, so far.
