I’ve assumed that it’s aimed at Americans, so I haven’t bothered, but it must 
be quite tricky to set the target audience in cases like this.

I reckon that I first went online, in a private capacity, in 1989; a colleague 
on the same squadron at MacDill AFB lent me his 2400baud modem and allowed me 
to contact a bulletin board.  It was for only a couple of hours, but it was fun.

I was properly online from about 1994, using Netscape on a library computer in 
central London.
