Chris, Moose and Ken ........... thank you for your opinions and comments which I will pass on verbatim minus email headers. In response to queries about their skill levels they are by no means beginners but are not at the levels of expertise of any one of you three. I know that my niece is a Canon user so the brand will not be a totally new learning experience. Based on my own recent two time experiences of suddenly being left with no operable, or satisfactorily operable, camera at critical moments I will advise that she takes a second camera if only a better quality point and shoot.

John,

I have been shooting with a Canon 5DmkII for the past five years. All of
the color work I have posted to the OM list in that time was shot with it.

The 6D your relatives are considering is very similar to the 5DmkII and
gives identical image quality. It should be a great camera and is a nice
inexpensive alternative to the current 5DmkIV and 5Ds cameras, which have
a lot more pixels than the 5DmkII and 6D.

The two lenses she has chosen are two of Canon¹s best. They¹re both very
expensive though. My 5DmkII came with a 24-105mm f4L-IS lens. Its a stop
slower than the 24-70 f2.8, but it has Image Stabilization. Because I had
a stroke a few yrs ago, I am not steady and I cannot shoot with non-IS
lenses anymore without a tripod. She might want IS, and could get it with
the lens I have or with Canon¹s new 24-70 f4L-IS lens. Both are a lot less
expensive than the 24-70 f2.8.

You haven¹t said what level of photography they do. If they¹re total
beginners, then the high-priced lenses they¹ve chosen are really too
expensive.
