Thanks for the link. Mind-boggling stuff.

I have a recommendation for firmware version 5.0. Create a new file type for firmware settings... lets call it .frm. Version 5.0 adds a new firmware sub-menu item that a) writes the existing settings to a dated *.frm file (which includes present level). This file goes to the flash card just like a photo.
b) recalls a *.frm file to restore the settings from that file

A *.frm file cannot be a binary replica of the camera's settings storage since new settings can appear and old one's disappear or be renamed. The restoration logic needs to account for this to handle what may be new functions or a new structure being fed data from an older .frm backup.

I think it may depend on what and how much is being changed. The same
type of notice occurs for the E-M1 for the minor upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1

maintained. " But the camera is now at 4.1 with lots of other changes
all of which wiped out the settings.

That is my reading as well, having just looked at updates for the E-M5
II, "This one won't reset the camera, but others will."

Maybe they really didn't think through this update thing very well for
such a highly customizable camera. Correcting the settings is a pain
and I don't use very many of them.

This may be of help. It's linked from an interesting, and possibly
usefully informative page about the E-M1 settings.

The link is to a very nice looking spreadsheet where one may record
one's own settings. Sitting in front of the computer with this on the
screen should make redoing one's settings much easier.

I'm going to make the slight modifications to it for E-M5 IIs for myself.
