Are R lenses relatively cheap now that the mount has been abandoned?

Yes indeedy, it's an SLR, hence the "R" for reflex, and needed a longer
register distance to clear the mirror box. (And otherwise, it couldn't
be adapted to a 4/3 camera.)
Whole 'nother thing from the classic Leica rangefinders.
