Chuck,

I and my mechanics are in full agreement on the 12-month limit. The
dealership where I bought the latest Volvo suggested that I use
synthetic oil if I were going to change every 12 months, at my low
mileage accumulation rate. I accepted that while they did the work, but
rely on my current independent shop for choice of oil now. They see
cars at all stages of their useful lives, so I think their experience
counts most.

I changed my own oil during my younger days, and saw up close and
personal what drained out of the engine. I suspect that today's engines
run much cleaner, but still feel that oil is the cheapest insurance one
can buy. :-)
