I have an ancient Zelox flashmeter. some previous owner replaced the (I
believe selenium) light cell (having an 'electronics set' in the 70's 
I'd call it a solar cell) with a silicon unit (with a trimming
resistor). If only... :)  A well made bit of kit though!
