The slide film's "medium" dynamic range only works if you're projecting
the image. Put it on paper and the advantage is gone and you're still
faced with the original disadvantage... that the scene dynamic range is
considerably less. I believe Norman Koren's comments here about why
professionals shot slide film and it has little to do with dynamic
range. <http://www.normankoren.com/zonesystem.html> In the "Slides,
negatives, and digital" section he says: "Back in the days when film
ruled, most professional professionals worked with color slides instead
of negatives because clients demanded them. Why? WYSIWYG! What you saw
was what you got; it was easy to judge the quality of slides, and when
they were good, they were really beautiful. Projected slides can
reproduce a brightness range of 1000:1 (a logarithmic density range of
3); the best you can do with a print is about 100:1. It's difficult to
judge anything from a negative; prints from camera shops or drug stores
seldom do justice to the information on negatives."

I love my digital work since, with my computer, it gives me that WYSIWYG
effect of my old Kodachrome while adding many more advantages in
post-processing and reproduction.
