You might enjoy the book Chris just posted about, Ansel Adams in Color.

He shot thousands of LF color transparencies, the vast majority of which never 
saw print. There are selections from his 
letters and other writing expressing his frustration at having these amazing 
transparencies - and no way with 
contemporary printing technology to come even close to reproducing them 
properly.

The reproductions in the second edition, at least, are really good. I find it 
fascinating to see what the master of B&W 
could do with color.
