This makes perfect sense. I just checked the E-10 and indeed this is exactly
what happens. Quite daft of me not to think of that. Is the reason for
closing down the aperture an attempt to protect the sensor when the camera
is switched off?

The aperture of E-10 is closed down to minimum when switched off and wide
open when power on. That's why it is brighter when switched on.
