Hi David, If you do decide to purchase the 70-300 I'd suggest getting it in time to test in similar conditions to what you expect on your trip. Here I'm thinking light levels and subject matter. I found the focusing on my 70-300 and E-420 combination to be close to unusable in early morning and late evening light when shooting low contrast subjects such as animal fur.
