Your message is carefully phrased, as always, Joel, such that I can give my
impressions without claiming any expertise.
Corel Aftershot pro is clearly aimed at adding non-destructive raw editing
features with digital asset management to the Paint Shop Pro product. I
assume the intent is to make Corel's products capable of competing with
Adobe's Lightroom as well as Photoshop, with the additional benefit of Linux
support. Corel describe Aftershot pro as Photo management software,
offering complete raw workflow, flexible photo management, with advanced
non-destructive editing. I would add that the flexibility of the photo
management means that you are not tied to Adobe's catalogs and/or libraries
(not that it represents much of a tie anyway) because Aftershot pro seems
happy enough to work with the OS native file system if you prefer that.
Sagelight raw editing appears very similar to Adobe Camera Raw and
Lightroom, although with a rather different set of editing tools (better,
they use different terminology to indicate the character of the changes to
be made, and arrive at the same results as with Lightroom), and there are
some convincing demos on the website. It seems to be without the
Elements/Lightroom library database. Some would see that as a major
advantage! Thus my impression is that the developers are seeking to
emphasize the attractiveness and ease of the editing system for
photographers who simply want to make the visual most of their images.
Sagelight will soon split into Standard and Pro editions, the offer price is
for the Pro edition, which perhaps suggests that the bargain pricing is to
draw in users for subsequent upgrade pricing (and maybe even a copy of the
Adobe business model!).
But, as specified, impressions only, as I do not have any extensive
knowledge of either piece of software.
