Mike,
the Costing of these gps loggers is :
igotu gt-120 : $ 50
igotu gt-600 : $83
igotu gt800 :  $95
I tend to agree with Chuck on this, the very much easier to use display/menu on
the gt800 is a big plus for the small cost increase ($12) and they have quite a
bit better functionality: sports gps watch ,compass etc. etc, accelerometer
sensor etc.   I guess the advantage  of these taggers over a Garmin or
similar full feature back country GPS is size and battery life, but they
obviously don't really compete otherwise.

Interestingly if you just want a pure logger the asset tracking devices used
for valuables or vehicles, can often be had very cheaply used on ebay ,even
amazon ~$25 . They have even longer battery lives and according to reviews work
quite well.  LandSeaAir brand, has some that seem good I am probably going to
buy one used to play with.

A while back I also used a laptop with maps and gps dongle in the car.
As you say that can work pretty well and with the google-earth style overlays
on the maps, it is even better for back country roads and finding trail heads
,camp sites etc.

Personally I would go for the upgrade to the IgotU120, the 600, because
of the auto-off feature.

Seems like it would be great for saving the battery. Anything fancier
than that and I'll just use one of my normal gps's which are far more
feature rich than that unit Chuck mentions. The 800?? Much superior
software is available too. And hardly more expensive. But then it may be
more than necessary.

Right now I have  a tiny little bluetooth gps that sits on the dash and
sends to the laptop where I have Nat'lG USGS 7.5min topos of all the
western US states. This is indispensable when we navigate the maze of
remote backroads in the desert. I also have them on my little handheld
but the screen is too small to be of much use when driving. Don't want
to end up like that couple from BC. I did think about a sat phone but
that was too expensive for our needs. Now I going to get the new
ResQLink.
