How odd that this should come up. We've had a very hot summer down here
in Phoenix, and with my house temperature being 86-88 it was a bit
uncomfortable. To make a long story short, I was dehydrating even while
sleeping at night I had entered a condition of potassium deficiency. A
long-term lack of potassium can lead to heart attack and nervous disorders.

I know all too well from outdoor medicine that simply drinking more water
is only a short-term solution to dehydration and it can actually make things
worse unless you take some sort of supplement such as buffered salt tablets.
Since I spend a lot of time hiking in the desert a firm understanding of thirst
and dehydration for me was essential as I could become dehydrated just thinking
about a dry martini.

I found that my daily vitamin/mineral tablets only provide 3% RDA of
potassium, which is not at all adequate. Long-term diet is more effective, and
by way of an extensive nutrition database (http://nutritiondata.self.com/) I
found that there aren't many foods that are high in potassium. Adzuki beans
are high, and I was already eating those regularly for their high zinc content.
Other common foods high in potassium are Black beans, Pinto beans, Beet
greens, potatoes, and bananas.

One of the foods highest in zinc is moose liver.....

Did I just hear running feet and a slamming door? :{b
