My best airshow pictures were taken from off the airport grounds, at a
spot the jets did their turn arounds to return for another pass. This
one particular spot they were no more than 50m off the ground and
directly overhead.
The Blue Angels do things a little differently and they do their
turnarounds at a higher altitude and farther from the airport. The
Canadians run a tighter show at a slightly higher altitude over the
display area, but their 18's are configured differently.
Several years ago, in Muskegon, Michigan, an F14 pilot was making a
full-throttle 360 turn in the middle of the airfield (in a 90 degree
bank) when he let the altitude drop a bit too much and it setup a
shockwave which shattered thousands of windows around town.
