I finally did my deliberate pull the plug (actually, flick the switch)
test. When the power went off the morning the only thing plugged into
the UPS was the Dell desktop machine. I normally don't plug the monitor
into the UPS since it a CRT and draws lots of power. This time I added
the cable modem and router to see if anything worked at all. When I
flipped the switch the big CPU box dropped immediately. But the modem
and router kept on ticking. So the UPS electronics seem to work and I
assume the battery is too old to deliver the needed current for the big
box. I'll replace the battery after double checking that the specs for
the smallish UPS say it should be able to support the power requirements
of the big box.
