Chuck,

I have only one small UPS, used to power my wife's old VCR and her set-top 
box with DVR.  It seems to respond almost instantaneously to a drop in 
power.  Hard to say what a chattering-type interruption would do.  When it 
gets fully charged, you could simulate that by loosening the wall plug and 
moving it around to give an intermittent connection, though not enough to 
burn the prongs of the plug.
