Thanks for the great tips y'all keep coming up with but so far we're 
still shooting blanks.  The "hosts" file on the laptop is no different 
from the desktop.  Nothing but hundreds of "baddies" inserted by 
"Spybot" and assigned to address 127.0.0.1.
