The bulb in question on the Prius (Feminine Zuiko Hauler), is a
standard mono-filiment peanut bulb. It's got a pinched glass base with
the wires bent around on the outside of it. It's just a shove in the
slot bulb holder. The bulb holder itself is then keyed to fit in the
lens housing. The bulb goes either way.

I practice good bulb handling techniques, including cleaning the bulb
off entirely and handling it with a paper towel.

The exact same bulb is used in the headlight housing. These are the
"parking lights" or nightime marker lights. Not the brake lights or
turn signals.

What is unusual about the taillights is that the bulb is inserted
inside a plastic box-shaped cone. The closed space is pretty tight and
I'm thinking that the bulb is just overheating. It is also possible
that the holder is not getting a good solid hold and either vibrating
or is not getting a reliable enough electrical connection and the
pulsing is taking it out.

With just one exception in the 8 bulbs I've changed, all are silvered
up on the inside of the glass.
