Reading Moose's exploits made me thing of a couple of things:

1. Through the years, Canon has had a feature in some of the various
EOS cameras which allows "trap focusing". What happens is you set the
focus point and when the subject comes into focus it automatically
trips the shutter. It's probably doubtful the OM-5D has that feature,
but it is a thought.

2. Slinging a tripod around on hikes is one of those things which is a
source of great frustration. Same with monopods. I've seen
photographers use all sorts of contraptions, but what I've resorted to
is a pair of Velcro straps. What I've done is made strips of
double-sided Velcro, using the rolls of self-adhesive stuff from the
fabric department at Walmart. Just throw a loop around the tripod,
somewhere near the head so it doesn't go anywhere. A second loop goes
around my belt or loosely around the shoulder strap of the camera bag.
As it is loose fitting, it stays down at the bag. When I stop and need
to lean the tripod against me, I just stick it to the Velcro attached
to the shoulder strap.

My monopod has the soft Velcro portion permanently attached just below
the grip. It will just stick to the other Velcro with a slight touch.
It's also great for attaching radio triggers and such. I use Velcro
for a million uses now. Usually when on a long hike, I'm using the
Canon backpack. More often than not I'm also using my small
lightweight tripod which I attach to the bottom of the backpack
through Velcro straps.

The only problem with Velcro is the noise.
