I should have been clearer. I can see that side to side tilt is a separate
function, as it should be. What I'm
interested in is fore and aft tilt and panning rotation (altitude and azimuth).
Most pan heads have separate controls
for tightening the two motions, while a handful tighten both with a twist of
the main handle.

It seems clear from images on the net and a review of the Maxi that both the
PH157Q and PHD31Q have the single handle
control I want.

What I'm now trying to figure out is which to get. They are the same price, but
the 157 is larger and weighs 1.3#, vs.
0.5# for the 31Q. As this is intended as a step up from my Velbon compact that
preceded your Maxi, I'd prefer small and
light.

The Maxis show an 'ideal' weight of 4.4#, and my 5D and 28-300 weigh 3.5#, so
it sounds like a winner for when I'm not
using a ball head.

:-) I'm well aware of the good and bad points of those QR plates. The plates on
the 157 are different, but still no
anti-rotation. All the stuff with anti-rotation is bigger and heavier than I
want for this.

Typical Domke quality. Hard to go wrong if they become available again and are
the right size for your needs. Are listed
as discontinued most places
