I tried cleaning it, and it's like the composition of the glass changed. 
Yes, it runs deep. I may try again as it is such a shame that such a 
nice lens has met such an end.
   A similarly weird condition is sometimes found in the 16mm fisheye. 
That element looks sandblasted.
