And yet when they started the single engine lines at Cessna a few years ago,
they picked only a few to put back into production, and one was the 172. You
would think that the pipeline was filled long ago!

If someone built an airframe from the ground up, there would be a long and
ardous, and not to mention expensive path throught the FAA certification
process. The competition for the "basic training" market is now light sports
aircraft like the Cessna Skycatcher, or flycatcher as it's called around
here, and that, made in China, is still a bit over $100,000. A bit lower on
the scale are some powered gliders.

To re-engine a 172 requires some engineering and approval from the FAA for
what is called an STC, supplemental type certificate, but that's not a big
expense. I know this because my father held one on that very aircraft.

Agreed, Chris. The 172 would seem to be an unlikely candidate, except
the idea is to create a powerplant replacement for an existing
airframe that can take it. This is actually rather smart as those
things are essentially disposable. I'm more likely to think they will
succeed by focussing on just the powerplant than try to compete
against the entire industry with a soup to nuts airframe that will
take decades to bring to market.
