I'm with Mark.  At least double the RAM or whatever is reasonable if you 
want to add to your current configuration vs replacing it all.  There's 
an old saw that says nothing improves virtual memory performance more 
than... adding more physical memory.  I don't know anything about the 
Mac motherboards so just be sure you understand the mix & match rules 
for the memory slots on your motherboard.

Another thing that might help is to add a flash drive to move the paging 
file off your (slower than flash memory) hard drive.  But I wouldn't do 
that until after adding more physical memory.  The best performance 
configuration is enough physical memory such that the much slower 
virtual memory paging file is almost never needed.

Chuck Norcutt (whose sole patent has to do with reducing page thrashing 
in virtual memory operating systems by means other than adding more 
physical memory)
