Hi Ian,

Sorry to hear this sorry tale. If you can fit it into your life, learning 
German is highly recommended, though...

When my dog was hit by a car in Herrliberg in 2002, the cop generously told me 
that he would not fine me for allowing her to run out onto the Seestrasse (she 
knows how to open doors and opened the garden gate when she saw my wife coming 
home). I guess the dog's and mine distress moved him to be a bit less Germanic.

Fortunately, the dog survived, following 13 days and 2500 CHF in the hospital 
and is still with us, every bit as crazy as back then, and loved every bit as 
much.
