One type of lens that doesn't do as well on most any digital sensor is one
where an internal element has a flat rearward facing surface. Unlike film,
which has a pretty neutral surface, a digital sensor has a mirror-like
surface which reflects much of the light striking it directly back towards
the source. If there is a rearward facing flat lens element (or uncoated
filter), this reflected light gets rereflected back towards the sensor
again.
There have been reports of this veiling flare which is not the problem with
the lens, but the protective UV filter attached to the lens.
