If it takes forever I would suspect that the bus is actually USB 1.1
rather than 2.0. Can you borrow a reader from someone else to compare?
If two different readers give the same dismal performance I would
suspect USB 1.1 (even though it might be labeled "high speed")
Assuming that you determine the bus is at fault then bypass it with a
decent PCI/USB 2.0 card such as this which gives 4X USB 2.0 ports
