I absolutely agree with Fernando. A tripod is the single most valuable aid to composition I can think of. Obviously, it isn't for everything--such as for people and event photography--even street photography would be a stretch. But one of the main reasons why medium and large-format images have the distinctive look that they do is because of tripod use.
