Agreed, especially the focal length part.

My experience was even worse... while in the "dark side", one night I went
upstairs to the terrace to make some shots with the C*ntax Aria + CZ
Distagon 18/4 -- the only lens I hadn't protected with an UV, because it had
no threads. I put the camera & tripod over a tiny wall for a better angle,
took some pics and, when finished, went to put down the ensemble BEFORE
replacing the lens cap...

Then I heard a KLANNNNNNNNNGGG!!! and saw a nearby T-clothes line (<
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Clothesline.jpg>) vibrating like a tuning
fork... you may picture my face! Then I looked _desperately_ for a ding or
scratch or any other flaw in the camera's finish... to no avail. The barrel
of the lens? also immaculate... but not the front glass :-( Not a big chip
(something like 3-4 mm) but worrying, especially for such expensive lens.

After some testing, it was clearly visible, especially at smaller apertures.
OTOH, in longer lenses such flaw would have little or no visible effect.
Fortunately, it could be repaired successfully -- I was told it was sent to
Germany to repolish and recoat the front element, because the elements for
this lens are matched at the factory and aren't replaceable individually.
IIRC, the repair was surprisingly unexpensive, at least compared with the
price of a new lens. Seems to perform superbly, as always.

Cheers,
