John,

I own Leica film bodies, and several lenses, but cannot afford a Leica
digital camera. Friends who shoot with the Leica M8 produce images with
sharper, clearer definition than I can achieve with my hybrid Oly/Leica mix.
This is attributed to the unique way that Leitz chose to go with its sensor
design, maximizing sharpness at the expense of sensor filtering. This
requires M8 owners to use filters on their lenses to make up for those left
off the sensor.

Admittedly, I have made my comparisons to images made by the rangefinder M8
rather than a comparison to the digital-back equipped Leica SLRs, where my
Elmarit originated. This is just a matter of convenience, and I'm not sure
there is much difference between M and R lenses.

So, to answer your question, IMHO, a digital Leica camera and lens
combination will outperform my combination. I chose to take a less
expensive route to enable me to get the quality of a Leica lens without
spending a lot of money.

I have no desire to start a feuding discussion of the merits of Zuiko vs
Leitz lenses. I have more experience with Leitz than with Zuiko, so I chose
that route. For what it's worth, my only Zuiko, a 14-54, is a very good
lens, and I use it frequently.
