Chuck,

I tried your suggestion, but, for my talents, the subject is too complicated 
to get a clean selection with the wand. I will leave it as shown.

In the image linked below, I was able to get the desired separation.  I will 
show it to illustrate that I agree with what you say about this sort of 
image.
