I forwarded this link to a friend who reminded me that I had once
predicted that, just like film, where we use the same piece of film for
both capture and archive, we would eventually use our digital capture
media as our digital storage/archive media. In other words, we'd buy
something like a CF card, use it only once and then store it.
I don't think we're really there because this appears to be a fire sale
but, at the cost of this Lexar card ($4 for 4GB) I could store about 300
13MB Canyon 5D raw files or more than 8 rolls of 35mm 36 exposure film
for a cost equivalent of about 50 cents/roll. The cost for a single
roll of Kodak Portra these days is in the $5-6 range or 10-12 times as
much and that with no processing. You've got to really, really, really
like film to continue on that path.
