I believe it was AG who said that a very few, early 50/1.4s had 
radioactive element(s).
As I recall, he said they had rather good overall performance, even at 
wider apertures.
Then he next, non-radioactive element version had similar central 
sharpness, but poorer outer regions.
And the next version had better overall balance of sharpness across the 
frame, but lost some in the center.
