Michael,

With regard to the RRS plate for your 50-200mm there isn't a totally
dedicated plate for it in the RRS lineup. Their suggested plate is actually
a very short Multi Purpose Rail style design rather than a contoured to fit
type. I have one as part of my system but don't keep it on the lens as it
makes resting the lens in my palm uncomfortable when I use the lens handheld
(yes I am aware that this makes a mockery of the concept of quick release).
YMMV of course :)

Jeff Keller actually emailed Olympus to suggest that they consider adding an
AS dovetail on future designs, their response was that AS was a case of the
tail wagging the dog. I thought their response was kind of insulting myself,
but anyhoo...

I can't fault you on the choice of the BH-40, it's the head I would buy if I
didn't already own an Acratech.

I have a really bad habit of overbuying, telling myself that I can amortise
the extra cost over several decades (if lucky) so it's negligible! Hence the
E-3, of whose features I'll only use a fraction. Currently no SWMBO/CDFO, so
no checks and balances :-) .

I think I'll start the tripod purchase top-down, with plate(s) and ball
head. Then I can try a few of the recommended sets of legs, to see what
really works for me - assuming Vistek have a good selection of their
catalogue in stock...

I'm thinking an RRS E-3 L-plate and a BH-40. Should I consider splurging on
a dedicated plate for my 50-200 too?

Michael
