You're right, but that does not bother me--this kind of light is just
not my style. I prefer the ambient light, whatever it may be--if it
means shooting f1.4 at 1600, then so be it. I am not saying you are
wrong and I am right, just that for my kind of photography flash is
absolutely unnecessary.

I am not religious about this--I did own several flashguns in my
Pentax (80s-90s) and Leica R (90s-00s) days. But now I am more into
simplicity, so the only flash I now have is the one built into the
E410, and I have never used it.

The best use I can remember having made of flash was in 1986, when
Halley's Comet was passing by. I and a bunch of other photo
enthusiasts, had driven to the Paynes Prairie nature reserve in
Florida (I was living in Gainesville, FL at the time) to photograph
the comet. The place was sufficiently far away from any towns that
there was no danger of light pollution. But the comet was a bit of a
flop--we had all expected something on the scale of aurora borealis
but instead it was just a pretty faint thing. At one point I got
bored with that, so I took the camera off the tripod, put on the
flash, turned around and snapped a shot of my fellow photographers.
Keep in mind that we had all spent about 30 minutes in complete
darkness at that point, and my flash was pretty powerful. As my
blinded victims were yelling at me and calling me unspeakable names,
I quickly packed up and left ...
