Just got a new Epson 4990 scanner (does film scans up to 8x10). I
bought it direct from Epson (a refurb, $279 + free shipping). Reason
for purchase? In the 80's (when I had a darkroom), I bought a
collection of 200 or so B&W train negatives. Tried the Epson 4490 but
the largest negative it would do was 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 (6x9) and the
software did not allow customizing the scan size bigger than that. These
negs are 2 1/2 x 4 1/8". According to paperwork included with the
collection, it was common practice for people to trade negatives or sell
duplicates. Nice scanner, I'm very happy with it so far. Here's a sample:
