I think these ridiculous combo drugs are simply means of extending
existing patents. Note that the statins involved are the older ones
which were probably due to lose patent protection.
IMHO, the US patent office has been grossly negligent for many years by
allowing minor changes to an existing patent to effect a new one. But
they got their comeuppance the other day when the US Supreme Court made
a major ruling that finally called an end to patents without any
significant innovation. The ruling was specifically against combining
features that do no more than produce predictable results.
I think the same has been happening in software and other fields and the
US patent scene is finally going to change for the better. Hurrah!
