The most fascinating graveyards I've ever seen were in the Keeweenaw
Peninsula of the U.P. These date right back to the original settling
of the area and the headstones typically have cause-of-death etched
into them.
Here in Iowa, the old country graveyards also date back to the
settling of the area. It's really wierd, here, because the entire
state of Iowa was settled in less than one lifetime. The original
stones were, I think limestone, so they are pretty tough to read.
