Whoa! Where did that come from? The only reference to the shootout
recently was by me. Keep the context clear, old buddy. I agree that
there are problems and limitations with the shootout. However, I believe
it is quite valid for the point I was making -

Seems unlikely to me that they would announce anything before Fall, and
certainly not before the 1Ds Mk III. Though slightly lower in mps, the
5D, according to some reviewers/users has superior overall image
quality. In ShootSmarter's skin tone shootout, the 5D was on top and the
1Ds II on the bottom. So they really can't make a 6D with more mps
before the 1Ds has a mp boost and image processing update.

My reply used the shootout only in a very narrow context:

1. Both Canyon models used the same lens.
2. Custom WB was performed for all cameras before shooting.
3. Several of each model were tested.
4. Aside from all the other cameras in the test, the 5D was best and the
1Ds II was worst, and a lot worse.

I believe it is reasonable to conclude on that basis that the newer
sensor/processor in the 5D is superior to the older 1Ds II.

C'mon now. You may believe Tamron makes POS lenses, but that isn't a
majority view. They made some superb MF lenses with performance at least
equal to Camera manufacturer's brands. In more recent AF lenses, I find
my 28-300 to be really good, as did Pop Photo's test. I've tested the
90/2.8 Di against the old 90/2.5, Zuiko 50/3.5 and Kiron 105/2.8 at 1:1
and 1:2. It beat them all, not always by much, but at both repro ratios.
The 90/2 wasn't in the tests becasue at least my copy was poor below
about 1:4 and long gone by then. Mike Johnson chose the 17-35 Di as a
best of category.

The particular model used has an 8.6 rating on FM, not the very top, but
well above average.

Custom WB was done on each body before doing the test. If that doesn't
correct for lens differences, you don't want the camera anyway.

The real shame is that they don't, it would be a real asset for 4/3. The
second real shame is which third party maker does do 4/3 lenses.
> So, the 5D is king of the hill.
Of a narrowly defined hill of limited use to most photographers, yes. To
me as a 5D owner, I suppose it's nice, as I do very little people
photography, so knowing I can rely on the camera is useful info. Still
not important, as I shoot almost exclusively RAW and this was a test of
the JPEG processors. And really, if color is important, I use the WhiBal.

So why fret? You know what your camera can do and how to use it to best
advantage. It may well be better than the 5D in that department. I
imagine there are a lot of pros and wanna be pros, Will's bread and
butter, out there who are struggling to get reasonable skin tones in the
mass portrait and event work they are doing. They will never buy an E-1
anyway, for several reasons. Why beat Will up for helping the poor
schmucks out?

Speculations as to why:

Pizza kickback.
Those pesky Canyon envy attacks.
Yet another delay in the fabled E-1 successor.
Lost job(s) to one of those schmucks.
Envy of Will, who has mixed his studio talents (whatever they may be)
with some promotion and organization into what appears to be quite a
successful business.

Nothing wrong with a good rant, been a bit pissy lately myself.
