Then 'specs' I was given for Usnea was 98% pure air, at the HQ of Big Basin,
19,000 acres large, the stuff is uncommon at the parking areas, but 1 block
away it shows up and 1/4th of a mile away another lichen that requires 99.8%
pure air starts showing up.
Usnea has some interesting medicinal qualities, but I think a place in
Norway is the only one manufacturing it, I've used it raw to stop bacterial
infections, though I'll say this, it is bitter in the mouth.

If it isn't hard (or if it is, give it some water for a few seconds, it'll
get rubbery almost immediately) you can gently pull on a large strand and
see the white thread in the center, a Lichen being a Fungus and Algae living
in symbiosis (that is together for those who only live eat breath know
camera terminology) If you get one with a Grey Thread in the middle, that
one isn't medicinal.

So far, I haven't been able to do a reverse macro of this while pulling the
thread apart and not have some sort of movement ruin the pic, when I get it,
this will look AWESOME I am sure!

Yes, healthy and abundant lichen is a good sign. But I've never
considered Old Man's Beard terrifying stuff. Most of the stuff I had to
watch out for was underfoot... like moccasins. :-)
