Not from me. I simply grabbed an example of what passes for high iso
performance to some makers.

Depends on the camera and how the process is implemented. However, my
main point was that calling it IS is simply a lie. The F30 has two auto
iso modes, one limited to 400 and the other to 1600. this is just what
those others do, but they don't call it something it isn't. Now Oly has
joined those who are making the designation IS meaningless without
looking deeper. Maybe we will have to start using N's term, VR.

I certainly hope Oly's implementation is either better than some others
or may be left turned off.

Indeed! Just what many of us have been waiting for, not only in a P&S,
but as a sign of things to come in DSLRs. The SP-550 could be an amazing
camera. I hope so. I"m only a bit skeptical of some aspects based on
Oly's track record with this kind of camera, good, but not great, and
the results of others who have done some of the things they are doing
with it. The fact that they kept the mp cout reasonable at 7.1 is very
positive.

Again, I'm gun shy. I can't remember offhand the camera, but I recently
read a review of a digicam that combined pixels for higher sensitivity
at lower resolution. The results were almost unbelievably bad. It was
hard to recognize what the subject was. Not saying Oly will do that,
just that it may or may not turn out to be just a gimmick. More
important, really, is the performance in the 400-1600 range.

And you can get a decent 4x6 out of 1.2 clean mps, but they gotta be clean.

I've been looking for a super zoom to fill in the gap between the 5D,
big, heavy and amazing, and the F30, small, light and amazing, but
limited focal length range. If Oly delivers with the SP-550, I could
finally buy a digital Oly! Wheeeee!

And I hope you are right! Next question, when will they actually turn up?
