PS -  My own top peeve is the agonizing demise of the hypothetical subclause, 
drowning in solecism on our side of the Pond. "If I would have known" just 
makes me cringe. Grammatical abuse ought to be banned by law. Unconditionally. 
With heavy sentences for the offenders.
